We’re more aware than ever of the risks of UV exposure and sunburn. Daily SPF is encouraged for all… which has led to questions as to why we don’t include it in our formulas.
Reactive responses to sunscreen
We specialise in skincare for people with problematic skin conditions like eczema, sensitivity, psoriasis and rosacea… and, for them in particular, choosing sunscreen is complex. Customers tell us that formulas containing synthetic UV filters, fragrance, preservatives or alcohol trigger irritation, dryness and allergic reactions - down to their compromised skin barrier allowing deeper penetration and thus increasing the risk of inflammation. Finding the right sunscreen, therefore, is often a process of careful personal trial and error.
Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) tend to be gentler, sitting on skin to reflect rather than absorb UV. However, they can leave a white cast on skin, which many customers say they’d rather avoid.
The benefits of sun exposure
We must also remember that sunlight isn’t entirely harmful and, in controlled amounts, can even be beneficial. Psoriasis-prone skin, for example, often improves with short, gradual sun exposure. Of course, overexposure can worsen symptoms and increase risk of damage, so take care.
More recently, we’re seeing a growing body of evidence on the important role sun exposure plays on overall health. It’s our main source of Vitamin D, essential for strong bones, muscles and a healthy immune system - plus, early morning light, (red and near-infrared wavelengths), is also said to be vital for charging our mitochondria; helping skin repair, recover and stay resilient.
Newer research also suggests UV exposure can positively influence heart, immunity and brain health. A 2016 Swedish study found active sun exposure lowered women’s risk of cardiovascular disease and non-cancer-related death - findings supported by a 2024 University of Edinburgh study using data from 395,000 people across the UK (a lower-light climate). As always, the key is moderation. In high UV, avoid exposure or protect skin - especially during 11am-3pm and when in the sea, mountains or snow. At other times, seek shade and wear protective clothing.
Supporting skin health
While we don’t include SPF in our formulas, the incredible herbal ingredients we harness most certainly help improve skin condition, strength, calm and protection in other ways - which can be beneficial during and after sun exposure.
